The term "Canada" in some form or another came into usage after Jaques Cartier's visit in the sixteenth century.

    - It was not the formal name of any jurisdiction until after the Constitution Act of 1791 when the British Colony of Quebec was split into Upper and Lower Canada.

-It was again applied to the new colony (United Colony of Canada created when Lower and Upper Canada were re-united in the 1836.

-When the Dominion of Canada (the current government structure we have) was formed in 1867, this "country" was still a part of the British Empire with extensive powers of self government. Certain areas though like foreign policy, most of the control of international trade and the military, and the highest levels of the court remained the domain of the British parliament.

-With the Statute of Westminster in 1932, Canada became a fully sovereign nation state when all the authority of the British Parliament was eliminated. (Note: Some powers still rest with the monarch to this day whom it is important to note is equally considered a part of the Canadian and British Parliaments)
