What really happens at the end of The Giver by Lois Lowry?

Does Jonas actually find a sled and ride down the hill to a waiting, loving community? If so, how did the sled get there? Or is it all symbolic and Jonas and Gabriel actually die? Is Elsewhere an actual place or symbolic of heaven? Thanks.

there are two more books after that, which will answer your question more fully, but yes, he does actually ride a sled. Out of his community/society into a totally different society.

The other two are gathering blue, and messenger and the societies each describe are not exactly better or worse than the one Jonas comes from, but different to be sure, and all reflect on the world we live in today. Which isnt always beautiful or perfect.

I remember reading that book in 7th grade and we had to write our own (ten page) sequal to the book or ending or whatever.

I made him start a new life with the baby and what not... LOL
