Originally hired out to French monarchs in the 1400's for sacks of grain to Switzerland which had experienced harsh growing seasons, the Swiss Guard once numbered close to 15,000. They were hired by the Vatican in 1506 as the See was reforming under Julius--the official date of the beginning of the Vatican arm of the guard was Jan. 22, 1506, still celebrated each year in Rome. They're still Swiss, they're still recruited from ranks of Swiss police and other paid volunteers, and yes they're still considered mercenaries.
