    I have an 86-year old friend who has had leukemia for about 25 years. She's very active and walks and goes out quite a lot, more than I do and I am 20 years younger than her.

    There are many types of leukemia and each has a different prognosis (expectation for recovery). They are usually defined by the type of white blood cell that is causing the problem in the bone marrow.

    Other factors include:

    * How aggressive the cell type is

    * Age of the patient

    * General health of the patient

    * Detected early or late?

    * Good response to chemotherapy or not?

    Here is some outcome information for two more common acute leukemias:

    I had a foster brother who got leukemia at 8 yrs old.

    He died went he was 13. His time was short. I guess

    it also depends on the type of cancer people get.

    Weeks, months or years if someone wants to

    put up and fight it. Lost a friend to it in 2005

    he died the next year.

    In the end, I guess it depends on the afflicted

    persons will to live.

  • There's no way to tell for sure and it really depends on several different factors such as, how far the cancer has progressed, how well the person responds to treatment, etc.

    Depends on the condition. They COULD recover, you know. Try to be more specific for better answers.

    Ask a doctor...the case for each person varies.
