Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart" (Captcha)
A CAPTCHA system is a means of automatically generating new challenges which:
* Current software is unable to solve accurately.
* Most humans can solve.
* Does not rely on the type of CAPTCHA being new to the attacker.

The thing you're describing is called a 'captcha' or 'humancheck', and is implemented for security purposes. The idea is that when the text is turned into an image and then distorted around a bit, a computer program trying to make an account won't be able to tell what the characters say, but a human will be able to tell because we're smarter than the programs are. This is to prevent computer programs from registering thousands of accounts and using them to send spam emails. However, some computer programs have been designed which CAN read the characters in a captcha, so it still isn't a foolproof method.

Most CAPTCHAs have been broken by smart computers. The best of these are simple site specific ones. They'll have instructions for you to follow, like "type the word 'astronomy' in the box. Since it's site specific, it works well. To get hit by a spammer, they'd have to do something for just your site. It isn't worth it. Besides, such a simple system is then trivial to change. And the easy ones can be set up so that blind people can use them. There's no image.

You have to type these because it is easy for a programmer to write a tool that will automatically subscribe to yahoo e-mails, and this can send a lot of spam (unsolicited e-mail). Yahoo is keeping their servers safe, and making sure you don't get lots of annoying e-mails.
They do this by adding these CAPTCHAs, which are difficult for computers to figure out but easy for people to read.Source(s): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captcha

Its a security measure.
Supposedly, only "humans" could read and type the characters they see. However, a hacker could figure out the mechanism for generating such characters and then auto-respond anyway.
