Franz Ferdinand was the Archduke Of Austria, he was assassinated by a Serbian anarchist named Gavin Princip whom was executed for his crime. Moreover, because of the assassins ethnicity, Austria decided that they would punish Serbia and they declared war on Serbia. Serbia was allied with Russia and Germany with Austria, both whom begrudgingly stepped in to aide their partners, they had no choice but to help them because they were all honored by treaty to assist one another in a time of war. Britain and France were allied to Russia and Poland and were drawn into the conflict. The US came into the war in 1917.
