my 5c worth is that the equation's more about slot use. The cards are close in terms of fps. If you fill both slots with 4870's you have nowhere to go when you want to upgrade other than getting rid of both card. With a 4870x2 you can put another one in next to it when you need more grunt. Its a much easier upgrade; and you would be aware that gaming machines need upgrading about ever 12 months to keep up with latest game requirements.

Also with a single card you eliminate crossfire issues, which may hamstring the cards on some games.

    the benchmarks are here

If you have PCIe 2.0 then go with the 4870x2 because it has ever so slightly better performance since they are on one card. If you have PCIe 1.1 then go with 2 4870s, because the 4870X2 requires a fast PCIe slot.

2, 4870s will communicate through 2 slots reducing the strain on one slot like the 4870X2 will do.

Just had this discussion with a friend. Also, 2, 4870s are about $20 cheaper, make sure they come with a crossfire bridge. (Bridges are normally $20 =[

the x2 is the same as 2x. The x2 is basically 2 GPUs on one card. Potentialy x2 could be more powerfull since you could Crossfire 2 4870x2 for quad crossfire.
