Yes, it is permanent. Once stem cells differentiate, it is impossible to reverse the process; at least with the technology we have today. That is why stem cell research is important. Scientists want to learn how to manipulate stem cells in order to make them differentiate and specialize into nerve cells. That could help people who diseases involving the nervous system, including Parkinson's disease.
