Stir fry: Why did the oil explode all over my chest?!?

I don't have a wok, since I have a flat-top electric stove, so I was stir frying in a frying pan. I heated up some oil on high heat and then tossed some broccoli in and the oil EXPLODED all over the place and burned me pretty bad (shouldn't have been cooking topless...lesson learned). Why did the oil burst like that when I tossed in the broccoli? Is the pan I used not thick enough, is it because the oil was too hot?!! I don't understand how to add the veggies to the oil!
