Backpacking Through New Zealand? ?

Question

I am graduating high school in June 2009 and i had the idea to go backpacking through New Zealand and i have no information on anything so if somebody could give me some sites or advice or anything it would be much appreciated.

Oh yes, do get a membership in Hostels International.

Yes, NZ is civilized. As to being like the States, not quite.

You could hike to all the locales used for The Lord of the Rings.

i don't know but i think new zealand is pretty much americanized. why not back pack through china, india, or thailand? they are much different, they have culture, and it would totally change your outlook on life.
