Does my Echo really need a heat sheild?

I had my car in for some work, the heat shield clips are completely broken off so there's not way to keep it from rattling, the mechanic got a second opinion and they decided to just remove it, saying the gas tank is made out of steel, so it won't be affected. Is the mechanic right and the car is fine without the shield on?

Update:

Yes to my car needs a shield, or yes the mechanic is right?

You have a mechanic suffering from lazy-itis. There is a reason that they put a heat shield between the exhaust and the gas tank. I'd recommend re-installing it correctly.

Driving without it could possibly damage the evaporative emissions system, or build up too much pressure in the tank due to heat.

Toyota just felt like wasting some money by puting extra pieces of metal on your car. Lol just kidding. The tank is most likely shielded to keep evaporative emmisions down. That being said it was put on for a reason. You 'll be ok without it.
