I'm not sure what you mean by "great", but here are some possible answers:

--Richmond is rich in history, being a seat of the Confderate government during the Civil War. There are many historic sites in and around the city.

--It's the capital of Virginia, with a very historic capitol building.

--There are many interesting places to visit, from amusement parks (Kings Dominion is just up the road), to great science and art museums.

--Parts of Richmond are quite attractive, with broad boulevards and waterfront stores and restaurants.

--Despite economic problems over the years, it's held it's own as a place to live, go to school, shop, or work.

Richmond, VA was the capital of the Confederate States before the Civil War. During the Civil War it was completely destroyed by the Union solders. It was rebuild during the Reconstruction Era (1865-1877).
