Neo simply means major conservative. Many claim the founder of neoconservatism was Irving Kristol. He wrote a book on neoconservatism. Its just the conservative views to the max. Bush was not a neo conservative but Reagan was.

Neo means new, so the term is thrown about to represent "new conservatives". What does that mean? It depends on who you ask. I dont like the term, but democrats love it because it just sounds derogatory. "Oh those neocons." Neocon can refer to those of us who support aggressive foreign policy, who support using the military as a deterrent and influence, and who support israel. On other issues there is no consensus. Bottom line is that the term should not be used because there is no such thing as a new conservative, you are either conservative or liberal on a given issue, there is nothing new about it. Read up on the politics of the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, nothing has changed, it is the same song and dance in a two party system. See link below for a good conservative quote. Some use the term neocon to describe a former democrat-liberal who switched to being conservative because with age comes wisdom and are now newly conservative.

a neocon is a conservative who has displeased other conservatives or shamed the conservative movement. in an attempt to distance themselves from unpopular political figures conservatives use this term to shift the focus from the conservative movement. an example of a supposed neocon... George W. Bush. unpopular republican conservative president or crazy neocon liberal...which sounds more realistic?

Neocons are conservatives with an added emphasis on military and international interventionism

Neocons tend to be more fiscally (occasionally, socially as well) liberal than average cons and have a very aggressive foreign policy, as well as a more expansionalist government ideal.

Neocons are hawks and love big government except for social spending.

Conservatives want smaller government, less taxes, more individual responsibility.

Neocons were democrats who defected to the Republican party in the late 70s and early 80s.

"neocon" is a word made up by the media to label people they don't like with a negative term.

    It's also a silly oxymoron.

If you look up "neo" and "conservative" you'll they are mutually exclusive.

Neocons sit on the Extreme Right, whereas Conservatives make some concessions to the center.
