a mass m=52g is suspended from a spring with a spring constant k=3.5N/m

determine the force acting on the mass when it is diplsaced 7cm from its equilibrium position. if the mass is then released , what is the period of oscillation? what is the frequency?

2) Mary observes damped oscillations of glider on an air track. she observed that the amplitude decreased to 50% of its original value after 10 seconds . what is the decay constant for the motion of the glider?

F = K*X = 3.5 N.m * 0.07 m

T = 2pi*sqrt( m / K ) = 6.28 * sqrt ( 0.052 / 3.5 )

f = 1 / T

there are several half-life equations

but

you are probably using this equation

N(t) = N(o) e^{-lambda * t)

N(t) / N(o) = e^( - lambda * t)

ln( N(t) / N(o) ) = - lambda * t

lambda = -t * ln( N(t) / N(o) )

N(t)= 0.5 , N(o) = 1 , t= 10 s

solve for lambda

a short way

you are actually given the half-life of the oscillation

lambda = 0.693 / t(half) = 0.693 / 10 s
