When does the will to learn become pretension?

At which point am I learning as some attempt at impressing others and thus validating myself; rather that genuinely taking an interest in the many facets/subjects of life... Even this question feels to my like pretension. Help?

You just symbolically defined grade school.

You learn things you dont desire to learn in order to impress your teachers/parents on how much youve learned about that of which you dont desire to learn.

    How ironic, isnt it?

Its a sad reality to know that grade school would be a fitting analogy.
