My engine makes a ticking noise when cold (the engine itself, not the temp outside) and you can hear it until the engine has warmed up (5-10 minutes). Any ideas what this could be? The tick increases with RPM's also. There is enough oil in the engine and it has regular oil changes.
Car is a 99 Malibu with 3.1 V6.

this sounds like a valve lifter problem. If it goes away after it runs for awhile you should not have a problem with it.Just keep the RPM down when you start it.It's a expensive job to fix.Source(s): experience

You could try to adjust your lifters or use a thicker oil. Also check for an exhaust leak.

getting old......oil pump may be getting weak....valves hanging up.....need oil...
