Excerpt from this article:
"...Over the last six months of 2009, SWAT teams were deployed 804 times in the state of Maryland, or about 4.5 times per day. In Prince George's County alone, with its 850,000 residents, a SWAT team was deployed about once per day. According to a Baltimore Sun analysis, 94 percent of the state's SWAT deployments were used to serve search or arrest warrants, leaving just 6 percent in response to the kinds of barricades, bank robberies, hostage takings, and emergency situations for which SWAT teams were originally intended.
These outrageous numbers should provide a long-overdue wake-up call to public officials about how far the pendulum has swung toward institutionalized police brutality against its citizens."

The current police state is something we are going to have to get used to in the coming years. The U.S. is in its final stages of death and the people in government will do anything they can to frighten us into surrendering our rights in order to keep their cushy jobs and power. The U.S. citizenry has been dumbed down to the point where they worship the people in the government like they are paternal/maternal gods on earth. America is no longer a country of self-reliant, "rugged individuals". The U.S. is no longer even a country anymore, it is actually an imperialistic, murderous, war machine and it's "citizens" should rightfully be called free-range tax livestock. The only reason they allow us to live is to produce tax revenue to pay for the lifestyles of the ruling class (bankers, politicians, government employees, etc...) and fuel the global war of U.S. aggression and occupation. I wish there was a way to wake up the American people before it's too late, but unfortunately the cat has already been let way too far out of the bag and Americans are simply too stupid to understand the consequences of the demands they are making of the people in government and are playing right into their hands.

Post 9/11 police departments got lots of federal money for SWAT unit equipment and training. They also found that by using these units for service of search and arrest warrants it was actually safer for the police and the poeple, the public at large and even the people who the warrants were being served on.

It will only get worse. the conservatives support the police, and the left supports a totalitarian federal government police force.
