A solar car is an electric car but not all electric cars are solar. Electric cars may have an electric motor and get the electricity to power it from:

    1. transmission to the vehicle by 3ed rail like subways, overhead wires like trams, and induction from buried cables like the Korean experiment:

    2. electricity can be stored on the vehicle in batteries, ultracapacitors or flywheels

    3. electricity can be made on the vehicle in fuel cells (FCEV), using an ICE engine and generator in a series hybrid design like a Volt, or the electricity can come from the sun through solar panels.

Some of the solar cars used in The world solar challenge (in Australia)(1) or the American solar challenge(2 ) are very impressive in their specifications:

But not all solar cars are race cars: (also see below) And some people claim that any [battery] electric car is a "solar car" if the batteries are charged with stationary solar panels:

This last overcomes a problem with putting solar PV panels on a vehicle. Photovoltaic panels will convert a percentage of the sunlight that strikes them into electricity. When the sun strikes them at an angle less energy is received. A vehicle is moving and frequently changing directions. Panels are then almost always always positioned at a less than optimal orientation to the sun. When added to already low available energy and mostly inefficient panels the available energy from PV panels on a vehicle is minimal. The concept has more merit for battery electric vehicles that may slowly gain some energy while the vehicle is parked or use sunlight to keep the interior cool while parked:

Most of these answers are over 4 years old and technology has moved on a lot since then, electric cars now look just like any other car you really would not be able to tell them apart from a petrol or diesel car.

Electric cars are powered by large batteries much like the ones you would get in your mobile phone. These batteries power the electric motors at each wheel station, electric cars have fantastic acceleration the Tesla Model S will do 0-62mph in just 4.2 seconds!

Electric cars will by 2040 have taken over from the petrol guzzling machines you see on the road today which is great news for motorists as the fuel cost of running an electric car is about 2p per mile!

However as for having the electric cars powered by solar power, this is not really a feasible as the electric produced would be insufficient to keep up with the demand. A good alternative is the hydro-powered cars that run on hydrogen the most abundant gas in the atmosphere, the engines are powerful and the exhaust fumes are nothing but H2O.

solar car or electric car mainly use PV module one the car. the PVmodule sbsorb the solar energy and tansformed to electricity. then the electricity can be stored in the battery in the car. if car need electricity,it can use the electricity in the battery.

A solar car only exist in the world of science fiction. In the real world they are not practical.

if you charge your electric vehicle with solar power, you save an additional 40% off the average utility electricity rate. It costs about $0.20 per mile to fuel the typical gas-powered vehicle ($4 per gallon), while it only costs $0.06 per mile to fuel the typical electric vehicle ($1.20 per gallon)
