What is your favourite brand of cruelty-free dog food?

I recently adopted a 2-year old GSD from a shelter, and I'm looking around for a good cruelty-free brand of dog food to feed him; does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks :)

Update:

I'm not looking for raw-food diets or for people to expound on their views of vegetarianism/veganism; I'm looking for answers to my question.

Thank you.

Update 2:

Wow! Great list, Horse Lover, and that is almost EXACTLY the type of answer I was looking for (although I'd like to know if anyone has tried any of the "cruelty-free" foods, and also how well their dog(s) like them). Thank you so much for taking the time to look into that (and thank you to those of you who actually took the time to think about the question and answer it properly...).

Update 3:

Hey, Candice: would you rather a chicken be brutally beaten, mutilated, and murdered before being fed to your dog, or would you rather see it treated humanely before it is killed quickly and painlessly?

*Whisper*: if you're not smart enough to answer a question, then save yourself the trouble of typing it up.

LOL! Dogs are natural killers due to their carnivore diet. Hello- they kill what they eat in the wild. They don't have an option to go to a Mc Donalds like we do. Just feed your dog a good holistic dog food (my preference is Blue Buffalo) if you want to get technical on a very obscure question... *whispers* ... by the way to get the chicken in the bag they plead it to sunbathe and break into a billion pieces...

    Cruelty free?

How about healthy? Wellness, Natural Balance, Blue Buffalo.

  • 1 decade ago

    There is no such thing.

Any dog food that contains meat is inherently not "cruelty free".

Any dog food that contains no meat is also not "cruelty free" - only here the cruelty would be you forcing your carnivore dog to eat a vegetarian diet.

ADD: which part of "there is no such thing" did you feel was not responsive to your question?

Go google "cruelty free dog foods" then and see how you make out.

cruelty free? i dont think there is such thing, dogs need meat and the meat comes from a dead animal. so unless you are going to only give them veggies and fruits(not recomened) your out of luck

  • 1 decade ago

The best answer to that is wholesome homemade dog food :) i bought a recipe book of the internet and treat my dogs every Sunday :D www.trainingmydog-guide.com/dogfood

  • Just breed your own ducks, hens and rabbits and give them to the dog to do the job.
