beginner Piano question?

Ok so I am trying to play the "Banks of the Ohio" and it is a 4/4 beat. In one of the boxes (sorry I don't know the proper term) the E note stretches (with the line) from one full box to the first note of the next box so that is like 5 beats. But I don't know if I should hold it for 5 beats or hold it for 4 beats and press it again.

Any help?

It's called a tie and you hold it for all 5 beats. And the boxes are called measures. :)
