    Fatty liver disease can develop from different causes:

    weight gain, obesity, malnourishment, insulin resistance,

    diabetes, certain kinds of medications (like steriods),

    having Hepatitic C makes a person more susceptable to have

    this, metabolic disorders, being in the third trimester of pregnancy,

    and more. Alcohol consumption is another main cause.

    It depends on what has truly caused the disease.

    Let me explain a little about it.

    When the fat first starts to develop inside the liver, it may not

    cause any problems...however, as more fat develops it can

    and will put added pressure inside the liver that will damage

    the liver cells. When the liver cells become damaged,

    the immune system of the body then responds to this.

    It then goes from simple fatty liver to Steatohepatitis

    (steato means fat, hepat means liver, and itis means

    inflammation0. The inflammation inside the liver also causes

    more liver cell damage and more pressure in the liver and

    will cause the liver to start to enlarge in size.

    This can be seen on an ultrasound or Ct scan.

    If caught early on and the problem is stopped: either by

    changing medications, being on a low cholesterol/triglyceride

    diet, stopping the consumption of alcohol, and what ever else

    is the cause...the problem could be reversed.

    However, if this isn't done OR cannot be done...

    it can lead to where the liver

    cells start to die off and form scar tissue inside the liver.

    It then becomes a progressive, irreversible disease known

    as Cirrhosis of the liver. Fatty liver is not a part of natural aging

    process.

    You should be seeing either a gastroenterologist or hepatologist.

    Many times a fatty liver disease can be reversed. I hope this

    GPs and FPs and the PAs all get really hyper about fatty liver. But the Endos I have seen don't even give it a second thought. One explained to me that most people over 50 or those on insulin life long have fatty liver and it signifies nothing.

    So I don't worry about it other than to take no medications that affect the liver more than Metformin XR does. Anything else is not in my list of what I take.

    I look up all Rx's on http://www.drugs.com to read the entire paperwork on any new to me drug before ordering it at the pharmacy. I want to know any possible side effects and if this med interacts with any of my regular foods or other drugs.

    Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is often a side effect of insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes. Some medications can cause NAFLD and there's some indication that certain people have a genetic susceptibility. Often diet changes, Metformin, and gradual loss improve the condition.

    I know several people who had NAFLD when they were diagnosed with diabetes and simply controlling blood sugar and diet were enough to stop it.
