why did the inspector kill himself at the end of Les Miserables?
It was a nice ending, but it makes no sense to me

The fact that a condemned criminal saved his life completely clashes with his world view. He believed that good was good, evil was evil, criminals were criminals, and there was no shade of gray in any of this. The fact that his life was saved by a man he had spent his life trying to imprison meant that none of the things he thought true really were. So, to him, this mean that his life was wasted and worthless.
