Is it true that the most favoured marriage for Muslims, of some cultures, is between first Cousins?

If this is so, then aren't you worried about 1,400 years of in-breeding?

Update:

I'm asking because I was just reading this, and have met three women who are married to either first or second cousins, and I thought this can't be true!

Update 2:

So, Batman, you are saying that this ISN'T true then?

Update 3:

I think you are from the Shallow end of the Gene pool Batman!

Update 4:

I was really hoping for some answers to this question - it has puzzled me.

There must be some people reading this who are either married to their cousin, or their parents were cousins, or their child has married their cousin.

I only know a handful of Muslims, one from Pakistan, one from Lebanon and one from Morocco. If all three that I have met, are married to their cousins, then there must be many, many more!! I can't believe that the only Muslim women I have met are the only ones who are married to their cousins!

Muhammad married his cousin. It's allowed in Islam and is in the Quran. Why can't Muslims just tell it like it is?

    Quran 33:50

Yusuf Ali: O Prophet! We have made lawful to thee thy wives to whom thou hast paid their dowers; and those whom thy right hand possesses out of the prisoners of war whom Allah has assigned to thee; and daughters of thy paternal uncles and aunts, and daughters of thy maternal uncles and aunts, who migrated (from Makka) with thee; and any believing woman who dedicates her soul to the Prophet if the Prophet wishes to wed her;- this only for thee, and not for the Believers (at large); We know what We have appointed for them as to their wives and the captives whom their right hands possess;- in order that there should be no difficulty for thee. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

"Zaynab was the first cousin of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Her mother was Umaymah, the daughter of his grandfather `Abd al-Muttalib. We can find no better example than that of the Prophet (peace be upon him), since he is the one Allah has ordered us to follow. If no one else in history ever married his cousin, the precedent of our beloved Prophet (peace be upon him) would be more than sufficient for us."

No, its not true...It is permissible not favoured, big difference.

PS First cousin marriages are legal in various places over the world. Funny I know countless Muslims have done all my life and only know ONE married to her first cousin. I am not related to my husband in the slightest, we are not even from the same country let alone family.

Charles Darwin married his first cousin, Emma Wedgwood. I am pretty certain he was NOT a Muslim.

Want a few more non Muslims who married their first cousin?

    Jesse James,

    Edgar Allen Poe,

    H G Wells,

Queen Victoria to name but a few...worried about inbreading in the Royal family though? I think not.

7 million in the U.S.; 1 million in Canada.

To make a rough comparison, just an idea how big 7 million is, TOTAL population of New Zealand is just 4.4 million.

Marriage between cousins is allowed in Islam but many dont practice this. Its a personal choice. A matured Muslim man can marry an old lady, a young LADY, cousins, up to 4 wives.

I personally dont wish to marry my cousins! Never even thought of that. Think again.. OMG! YUCK!

No it is true only amongst Arab Muslims.

Muslims of Non-Arbab countries do not marry their children with the daughters and sons of the real brothers and sisters. Their thinking is that marriages with close families can cause problems and disunity between brothers. My father refused to marry his sons and daughters with the sons and daughters of his brothers and sisters.

I don't think so, why because once big problems arise from the marriage, it can surely drag the whole family (blood relatives) into the problem, which can later create hate between them, and not talking anymore to each other, etc...which is actually haram!

Although marrying a cousin is a little close to incest for my taste, I believe it's not strictly forbidden scripturally or genetically.
