How do you respond to the following statements?

Some of these would probably be considered stereotypes, but others are things I've heard/seen said on here and in real life.

1. Rap is all about bitchez and hoes and drugs and partying.

2. If you don't listen to classic rock, then you have awful music taste.

3. Metalheads are generally angry and aggressive people (this could also go for punk fans, I suppose)

4. Writing pop music does not require talent.

5. (insert genre here) is not real music.

6. Electronic music all sounds the same.

7. Insulting a musician means you're jealous of them.

8. Male Justin Bieber fans are gay.

9. Being a fan of mainstream music makes you a mindless sheep.

10. Being a fan of "indie" music makes you pretentious.

You don't have to do all of them, of course.

    1. Rap is all about bitchez and hoes and drugs and partying.

rap is a style of vocal delivery. it can be, and is, used to talk about any subject manner.

    2. If you don't listen to classic rock, then you have awful music taste.

classic rock is a radio format. if you listen to a radio format you don't have taste in music, you borrowed someone else's.

    3. Metalheads are generally angry and aggressive people (this could also go for punk fans, I suppose)

a large variety of people enjoy metal. i also find it interesting that in the case of rap, the stereotype was that all the music is about X, but in the case of metal the stereotype is that the people reflect one of the archetypal subject matters of the genre.

    4. Writing pop music does not require talent.

not true. the producers are often very talented people. some of the singers, however...

    5. (insert genre here) is not real music.

    music is music

    6. Electronic music all sounds the same.

you should try listening to electronic music. it is not all club music like the stereotypes assume. it spans the range all the way to avant garde jazz.

    7. Insulting a musician means you're jealous of them.

or it means you don't like their music. don't assume other people's intent.

    8. Male Justin Bieber fans are gay.

if i meet one i'll let you know

    9. Being a fan of mainstream music makes you a mindless sheep.

making statements based on stereotypes makes you a mindless sheep

    10. Being a fan of "indie" music makes you pretentious.

where to even begin? with the amazing variety of music recorded on independent labels these days, or with the idea that enjoying any attempts at high art is somehow a character flaw?

    1. Rap is all about bitchez and hoes and drugs and partying. (ladies and gentlemen I present 80s hair metal. also, why only hoes? let's get some songs about spades and watering cans going)

    5. (insert genre here) is not real music. (lol@imaginary music)

    8. Male Justin Bieber fans are gay. (so are some of the female fans, let's not be sexist people)

    9. Being a fan of mainstream music makes you a mindless sheep. (as opposed to a mindful sheep)

    10. Being a fan of "indie" music makes you pretentious. (only if you're an asshole about it)

Being an indie music fan does not make me pretentious! Arcade Fire is my very favourite band, but I do listen to music from all genres, and I don't judge people based on their musical tastes. I'm sick of how if I ever recommend an indie band on a site, I get all these thumbs down and comments about how I'm a "hipster" or "think I'm smarter than everyone else". I don't like this music for the idea of it being not mainstream, thinking it'll make me cool, I like it because I relate to it and like the way it sounds, nothing more.

The people that are calling me judgemental are the people that are doing the judging.

Sorry if that was kind of a rant, but I thought I'd take the opportunity.

    1. "Well, that shows what little you know about it. I'm sorry you believe that."

    2. "That can't be because my musical tastes is superior to anyone else's."

    3. "Not all but a lot are, yes. I've been in situations with that kind more times than I care to mention."

    4. "Well, that shows what little you know about it. I'm sorry you believe that."

    5. "All music is real music. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's not music, get over yourself."

    6. "I wouldn't say it all does. But then again, I don't listen to much electronic so I don't quite have a firm opinion on it."

    7. "Uhm, no it doesn't."

    8. "So they can't just be males who happen to like Justin Bieber? That's awfully shallow of you."

    9. "If you really believe that then I hate to tell you, but you're as much a 'mindless sheep' as you claim mainstream music fans are."

    10. "No it doesn't, but I can see where you're coming from. A lot of indie fans are total pretentious snobs, but not all are."
