    Each of these telescopes uses a segmented parabolic mirror and a convex hyperbolic secondary in a Cassegrain configuration. The individual segments are aligned continuously (four times per second) to counteract distortions due to gravity and, to a lesser extent, due to atmospheric conditions.

    The Keck I mirror was the first to use this segmented, adaptive optics approach, but since then, this has been used in all large visible and near-infrared telescopes. The adjustments are still not fine enough to handle requirements for ultraviolet observations.

    The Keck mirrors are parabolic surfaces made from 36 thin mirror segments in a honeycomb pattern. Each mirror segment is 1.8 meters wide, 7.5 centimeters thick, and weighs about 400 kg. Each segment is aligned by a computer twice a second.

    The mirrors themselves are made from a special glass-ceramic called Zerodur, coated with 120 nanometers of pure aluminum.
