    Canada was evolving as an independent entity after having formally become a 'Dominion' in 1867.

    Canada did not yet have its own military, per se, nor a means of declaring war. Canada entered World War I as part of the fighting force of Great Britain, while forming her own divisions within that military. Canadian troops managed to be those used for breaking through lines of the enemy forces and thus gained a reputation for bravery and a certain amount of recklessness on the battlefield.
