I've always thought "Young adult" was an oxymoron.

But OK (and taking a slightly skewed approach) -

    1) Ten books you should have read by the time you're ten -

    Green Eggs and Ham

    The House at Pooh Corner

    Alice in Wonderland

    The Hobbit

    Black Beauty

    The Secret Garden

    Treasure Island

    Any Tintin book

    The Jungle Book

    Anne of Green Gables

    2) Ten further books you should have read by the time you're fourteen -

    The Lord of the Rings

    Little Women

    To Kill a Mockingbird

    The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

    Animal Farm

    Of Mice and Men

    Cider with Rosie

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

And - alright - Harry Potter

After that, the world's your oyster.
