why is the border between alaska and British colombia a populated region?

ok so i have this stupid question for geography and i dont have the atlas im supposed to have to do it because my teaches an idiot so thats the question^^^^ except well its in french actually..for me..cause i takes geo in french...but anywyas ya help me please! it was due friday so its already late and i got 5 percent off ;s

    Basically, because it is close to the protected part of the Pacific Coast, and therefore has a relatively temperate climate and is close to transportation by ship. Further inland and further north, the climate is harsher and the transportation more difficult and more seasonal.
