I'll try:

#1.

(a) 8/12 + 6/12 = 14/12 (improper fraction) = 1 and 2/12 = 1 and 1/6 (mixed number)

(b) 1 and 4/6 + 2/3

Find a common denominator, which is a multiple of both 3 and 6 (6 is the lowest)

1 and 4/6 = 10/6

2/3 = 4/6

10/6 + 4/6 = 14/6 = 7/3 (improper fraction) = 2 and 1/3 (mixed number)

#2

(a) 8/16 - 2/8

Convert 2/8 to 4/16 (multiply top and bottom by 2)

8/16 - 4/16 = 4/16 = 1/4 (divide top and bottom by 4)

(b) 5/10 - 3/10 = 2/10 = 1/5 (divide top and bottom by 2)

(c) 3/4 - 1/3

Find common denominator, as in #1(b), above

3/4 = 9/12

1/3 = 4/12

9/12 - 4/12 = 5/12

#3

John ate 2/4 slices = 4/8

Maria ate 3/8 slices

John ate more pizza.
