Two ways of working it out:

First, Basket is £20 sale price is 15% off so which can be expressed as 0.15 so 20 x 0.15 = 3 so £20 - £3 is £17

Or the more direct way

15% off Leaves 85% which can be expressed as 0.85. £20 x 0.85 = £17

OK, the first thing that you must do is: find 15% of £20 by multiplying £20 by 15/100, what you get is the amount that the cat basket normal price was reduced by, then you need to subtract that from the normal price i.e £20 - £3 and you will get the sale price of the cat basket.

and the £3 is the answer that you get when multiplying £20 by 15/100

I guess that will help.

10% of £20 = £2

5% of £20 = £1

so 15% = £3

£20 - £3 = £17 (the sale price of the cat basket)

this is second querstion recently on easy percentages first of all ignore those who say its £3

£3 is tha amount taken off

ie as some have said

10% is £2

so half that again is another £1 ie 5%

total is 15 per cent off so 2 plus 1 is 3 take that away from £20 and we have £17

for those who end up with answer as £3 you are only half way there and in a sum you would lose out ie be marked wrong

always look at the question

ie if question was

how much is taken off £20 in a 15% sale then yes £3 would be correct but question asks work out the sale price

if youj gave the shop £3 i think you would find yourself beinf arrested for shop lifting

who on earth is the twit who seems to have voted down every correct post

my goodness its scary people voting down when the ansew is 100 per cent correct

Well, do it this way:

10% of 20 is 2; because you just move the decimal over ---> 20---2.0

5% of 20 is half of what 10% of 20 is. If 10% of 20 is 2, then half of that is 1.

So, the answer is 17.

You can also find this by saying "20 *(times) .15; which is 3. So the sale is for 3 dollars off.

Turn it into a fraction. Since you know 20 is 100% you want to find out what number 15% would be - so x/20 = 15/100. Cross multiply to get 100x =15 X 20. so 100x = 300. Now you want to get X by itself so you divide both sides by 100. X = 300/100. So X = 3

Now you know that 15% of 20 is 3 so you just subtract 3 from 20. The final cost will be £17.

If the price is reduced by 15% then selling price will be 85% of original price

Therefore sale price is 85% of £20 = 85/100*20= £17

I am pretty sure the price would be £17

What you can do to easily understand it is to find the 15% and substract it from the original price.

£20/100 = 0,2 * 15 = 3

20 - 3 = £17

I am not entirely sure this is right. but it should be.

Reduction by %:

If you're reducing something by 15%, then the new value will be 100%-15%=85% of the original.

So:

1) Take the percentage away from 100:

100-15=85.................................................................(1)

So the new value will be 85% of the original

2)Divide (1) by 100

85/100=0.85..............................................................(2)

3)Multiply the original value by (2):

20x0.85=17

Therefore the new value is £17

Edit:

For what it's worth, if you want to increase by a %, then at step 1) add the percentage to 100 instead subtracting, then follow steps 2) and 3) as normal.
