Political Corruption was the main cause of both Rebellions, in lower Canada it was due to the Colonial administration favouring English colonists and ignoring the needs of the French colonists. In upper Canada it was due to the control over the colonial administration that the wealthier colonists had, and which denied many rights to the poorer colonists. In both colonies demands for reform were ignored and the rebellions were the result.

In response the British instituted the principle of Responsible Government in the colonies, which required the colonial administrators to make many reforms to make their systems more fair.
