It depends on what time of year it is.

Right now, early September, I prefer watching animated movies like "Heavy Metal" (the 1st) or independent movies. Try "Karakter" - I'm pretty sure it's Dutch. I;m not even sure I thought the story so interesting, but they made it look like it was larger than life. It's a period movie, so costuming and setting were meticulously done. Also, they stylized the characters so they look slightly unreal and act in very deliberate ways, what you'd expect to find in a superhero movie. It's like a superhero movie w/o the superpowers or falling asteroids.

Also, get "Usual Suspects". Even if you guessed the ending, this is still an incredibly re-watchable movie; as is "Miller's Crossing" by the Coen Brothers.

Try also watching episodes of "Liquid Television" and "Aeon Flux".

In a couple of weeks, when we see the onset of fall, I'll look into Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" - the extended cut versions. I may even watch Bakshi or the Rankin+Bass versions.
