The exponent is the number of places you move the decimal point to the right or left

    Examples

    4.2 x 10^3 = 4,200...decimal point moved 3 places to the right

    4.2 x 10^- 3 = 0.0042 decimal point moved 3 places to the left

    Similarly, 3.8264 x 10^3 = 3,826.4 and 5.986 x 10^4 = 0.0005986
