"Why were the jews targeted in the holocaust?"

For accuracy add on Bolsheviks and Communists, Romas, Gypsies, Jehovah's Witnesses, Roman Catholics, homosexuals, etc.

Six million jews were killed, and five million other ethnicities.

Why were Jews themselves tageted for execution...

    a/ for racial purity,

"The Nazis believed Germans were members of a “master race,” superior in mind and body to all other peoples. The Nazi state sought to foster this supposed “superiority” by preventing Germans from intermingling with “inferior” peoples, and encouraging the number of children born to “healthy” members of society while preventing the procreation of “inferior” types"

b/ because no other country would accept Jews when they tried fleeing NAZI Germany

and c/ because the Madagascar Plan fell through.

Because the German political 'right wing' who supported the German dictatorship (of the Kaiser and military, then the Nazis) just like the right wings of Russia and Austria had been targeting the 'Jews' with hate propaganda, bullying, and using them as 'scapegoats' to blame everything on for decades starting in the mid 1800's (right after the failed Europe wide 'revolution of 1848'). The idea of all 3 of these dictatorship empires was to give the public some helpless minority group to pick on, bully, blame for everything and hate...so the right wing dictatorships could stay in power (whatever the public was unhappy about was the 'Jews' fault, what ever went wrong the 'Jews' did (never the dictatorship), whatever the public wanted changed couldn't be because 'Jews' were behind it etc.). It was the basis of their power.

The Nazis being the farthest most extreme of the right did it all the more and to other target groups too.

The Jewish community included some very wealthy members of German society, which was in a very deep economic recession. Instead of attacking capitalism, the Nazis turned their economic issue into an issue of race and attacked Jews. The Jews were not all wealthy, of course, but for the Nazis they served as a symbol for all of Germany's problems.
