Most NHL owners are in fact conglomerates. That means they aren't people but corporations. The "owners" that Gary Bettman woks for are the Board of Governors of the NHL.
Of the owners eleven are faceless corporations, three are restaurateurs, two are drug dealers, three are real estate magnates, two made their money in oil and gas, three are Wall street investors, one made his fortune in cable TV, and the other five are somehow in the computer business.
None of them with the exception of the Phoenix Coyotes are owned by "hockey" people. In all cases hockey is a sideline for them.
As a governor of an NHL team he will preside over the board of his team's operation. He will take part in the hiring and firing of the General Manager and strangely enough sign all player contracts for his team. He will also represent his team at the league Board of Governor meetings held biannually except in years of CBA negotiations. At these meetings he may participate in the searching for and hiring and/or firing of the league commissioner or president.
Of interest to note the average NHL "owner" has 20,000 employees working for him in his primary business but the 23 highest paid ones are giving him the most trouble.

A NHL owner probably has numerous business ventures he or she owns. So a good NHL owner will hire a competent General Manager (GM) to run his NHL team unless the team owner possesses the skill to do this job.
I don't know if the NHL has any family owned family run teams. I do know in family owned family run sports franchises are not as common as they once were. I believe the Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the few family owned and family run sports teams. The Rooney family owns the team and they run it.

Original Six put it best.
Most NHL fans forget that and blame it on the owners like that numb nut Timothy B.
