How does licensing and the D.M.V. work in the USA?

Are all the states linked together at the D.M.V. or are they independent of one another?

Every State has its own DMV (although most don't actually call it "DMV")

However, their records are all linked electronically, so if, for example, you have a California Drivers License but get convicted of DUI in Maine, CA will still pull your license.

    Richard put it very well.

Every state has its own Department, but they all communicate very well and you really cannot get away with much via state lines. MAYBE a parking ticket, but even that will eventually come back to bite you.
