PHYSICS QUESTION: A person on an apartment balcony holds a ball over the balcony and throws it directly upward?

I don't understand, please state the given and the formula used to get the answer thank you in advance :)

    Given: how high is the balcony above ground, and what initial velocity ball is thrown, up.

    1) how high does ball go above balcony: V / A = T, V/2 x T = distance (up)

    2) how long to hit the ground: D = balcony + up, use: Down =AT^2/2, T = SQRT((Down/A) x 2)

    3) velocity at impact = AT
