Why is forgiveness so hard to do?

Maybe 'small things', sure...someone borrows a book, loses it,

but then there's....

someone who betrays your trust and maybe kidnaps your child....

or someone who lies to you and steals your customers from you...

So many things that happen to people, so hurtful.

Yet we all know that it profits us nothing NOT to forgive, doesn't it?

Doesn't it HURT us to NOT forgive?

The person is long gone, usually. (if not, then they just never understood).

So, what is it that we find forgiveness so very hard to do?

Because we do not trust in the Lord to take care of the situation in our behalf. We think we need to keep track, a tally; and hold onto the hurts like a woobie. It further builds our walls against God. And robs us of blessings. For us and other people. God forgave us - each and everyone of us who believe. We have ALL done things we would NEVER forgive anyone else. We, as Christians, HAVE to do the same for others. God forgave US. Believe me, God does take care of business. Trust in that. And when you hear of what He has done, it will be shocking. A word of caution - be careful what you pray for.

Don't be like me. When I finally got around to the biblical definition of "forgiveness" it was too late. Missed my opportunity. It is a very harsh lesson and an even more sobering realization of how far I have to go.

First, we must deal with the pain that these people cause us. They are unlikely to come back and apologize, or otherwise give us closure, so we must find it ourselves. Trying to see things from their point of view helps. For example, someone who says something hateful and insulting must be in terrible pain to lash out like that. Also, remember that you receive from the Universe what you put into it, so people who hurt you are going to suffer even more at some future time because of it. As such, they are really hurting themselves in the end.

Try to remember this the next time someone causes you harm.

Forgiveness is done for self, to rise above and be the bigger person.

“Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much.”

    ― Oscar Wilde

“Forgiveness is the fragrance that the violet sheds on the heel that has crushed it.”

    ― Mark Twain

Why not ask if God can forgive those that don't believe he even exists.

When he says no, ask him why he finds it so hard.

Thomas is right. People don't deserve it. That includes us. Yet Jesus forgives us anyway. We should extend that same forgiveness to others.

Pain or losses doesn't permit us to forgive the person who committed mistake.
