Vatican City is what is left of the Papal States that the Freemason Kingdom of Italy conquered. The Papal States had the Swiss Guards but also had its own foreign legion with Catholics from all over the world enlisted. During its final battles the majority of soldiers were Irish and French with soldiers from Africa to as far away as Japan.

The rest of the Papal Army - the Swiss Guard are the last of a long series of draw-downs.

EDIT: really - thumbs down? Clearly, they do not know the history of the Papal Forces. The Pope at one time had a large army of his own, which gradually became smaller and smaller as the 18th and 19th centuries went on. After Italian unification, and the disestablishment of the Corsican Guard and the Papal Zoauaves, the remaining Papal Forces were essentially a Regiment of line infantry (the Palatine Guard) and a regiment of heavy cavalry (the Noble Guard), and the Pontifical Swiss Guard (the formal name of the Swiss Guard). In 1970, the Pope abolished the two regiments, with the current Swiss Guard being the sole remaining military forces of the Vatican, and taking over the ceremonial roles of the former units.

Swiss guards at the Vatican? It can be absolutely all about guarding the gold that the Nazis stole from the Jews and that the Vatican has fleeced from its poverty troubled believers.

PRIOR TO USING THE SWISS, GUARDS WERE PROBABLY VARIOUS ITALIAN ARMY OR SOLDIERS, BUT DURING THE 14TH CENTURY THERE WERE WARS BEFORE UNIFICATION.

IT WAS PROBABLY SUSPECT WHO TO TRUST.

THE SWISS WERE USED BY MANY EUROPEAN COUNTRIES, BECAUSE IT WAS HARD TO KNOW IF LOCAL BARONS OR INTEREST HAD GUARDS IN THEIR POCKETS.
