What is the role of Informed Consent in a medical setting?

I need your views on the pros and cons of informed consent and what role it plays in a medical setting?

    The popular fiction is that competent adults have the absolute right to decision-making based on informed consent. In reality, the level of people's competence in complicated matters is pretty darned limited.

    Also, people in pain or seriously ill are not in their right mind, almost by definition, and that point seems lost in the shuffle. Nobody really cares to force unwanted care on people who seem to make the decision more or less rationally, except in some very peculiar circumstances. Nonetheless, the entire concept needs to be taken as a guide, not something written in stone.
