Can I use automatic transmission fluid in my mountain bike forks?

Proper fork oil isn't easy to find in my area and I've heard a few people say you can use automatic transmission fluid and it works out fine.

If I was to use fork oil then what grade should I get?

No. Transmission fluid is not the thing you want. Go to an auto parts store and get 5W or 10W gear (differential) oil.

Do not use transmission fluid in your forks. Transmission fluid will cause any rubber parts in your forks to swell up and eventually dissolve.
