How do we convince the Cons that their War on Drugs is a total ( and damned expensive ) failure?

A true Conservative wants to end the War on Drugs, the War on Poverty, and the War on Terror for the most part. It's caused us way too many entanglements in its execution. Conservative philosophy relies on less government intrusion into the life of the individual. The War on Drugs was a Republican idea, and Republicans are not always Conservatives.

Whoa! Why are you pinning this all on the Conservatives?

There have been times when Liberals have had total control of the gov't, both the presidency and the Congress. And when that happened, they never lifted a finger to end the War on Drugs.

Truth is, most Dems are just fine with the War on Drugs.

You can't convince them with logic, reasoning, and facts. These are the same people who think evolution and global warming are hoaxes. These are the same people who vote Republican in spite of the fact that the 10 poorest states are all red states run by Tea Party Republicans. These are the same people who think that tax cuts for the rich and less regulation of big corporations will bring us prosperity, even as we're still trying to recover from the recession that happened the last time this happened.

So to convince them that the war on drugs is a failure, we'd have to stop talking about actual evidence. No more graphs or charts showing what a failure the war on drugs is. No more facts showing how few traffic crashes are actually related to Marijuana in relation to alcohol. Stop talking about the fact that countries that have legalized it haven't even seen an increase in drug related problems. Facts and evidence are just too complicated. If it takes more than a sentence to explain it, forget about it, it's not going to work.

To convince the right wing we'd have to shift the focus from facts to emotions. Tell them that the war on drugs is "big government". Start calling it "socialism". Find a spokesperson for the war on drugs, then start talking about that person's hypocrisy rather than the actual facts (think Al Gore/global warming for an example of how this works). Those are the ways you have to appeal to the right wing.

Just like every other war we have been involved in from the Korean war on. Politics get in the way and place boundaries and rules where they shouldn't. When laws aren't constantly followed, when targets are put off limits, when we can't even secure our borders, there will be no victory. Either commit, 100% to these things or don't do them at all. This half assed, feel good crap, so that peoples feelings don't get hurt. Is complete BS

I think the last of the support relies on Reagan era laws which funnel a lot of drug money to local law enforcement.

"damned expensive" is what the drug war is to state governments, federal governments, and tax payers, who foot the bills for jailing these people.

A money maker is what the drug war is to local enforcement who get government subsidies and get to keep a percentage of money and goods seized in drug raids.

Something logical I heard was that we spend enough on the War on Drugs in this country every year, to buy and destroy every illicit Opium and Coca growers crop in the world. Maybe a different approach might be better.

One way would be to lose the idea that it's a libs vs cons issue. Lot of both people on both teams think the drug laws are ineffective and worse than useless.

Well it took a Russian leader to stop Obama from starting a World War so... my guess is to ask Vladimir Putin to stop the drug war, too.

Tell that to the parents of underage kids that have a drug problem.
