The holocaust took place after the Wannsee Conference which took place on the 20 January 1942 at a villa by a lake just outside Berlin. The meeting was chaired by Reinhardt Heydrich and contained several senior Nazis and was convened to discuss what they should do with the Jews that they had acquired in Eastern Europe. Until that point Jews in captured lands were put in ghettos and labour camps and were not treated particularly well but there was no mass organised programme to exterminate them - work them hard and if necessary to death etc, but the general intention was to use them as cheap labour in the Nazi war machine making uniforms, utensils etc. After the Wannsee Conference the Nazis switched to the "Final Solution" that is a deliberate policy of eradicating the race.
Prior to WWII Jewish people had been stripped of rights - eg the Nuremburg Laws and were forced to wear Star of David armbands etc but were not being exterminated.

Holocaust historians generally the date the beginning of the Holocaust from Kristallnacht,a state induced pogrom across Germany on the night of 9-10 November 1938.Although largely carried out by the SA (a Nazi Party organ),state police and security personnel were also involved in some arrests and killings of Jews for the first time in an official capacity.

Well, I agree with what is said above, but:
Remember that antisemitism had occured all over the world for centuries. Something bad happened? Blame the jews. That's what people thought. During the Black Death period in Europe, the Jews were blamed. Jews were always singled out, and blamed for everything bad. What Hitler did, was just a smart way to create a common enemy for the German People and to get the money the Jews posses (because jews are known for being rich).

Jewish refugees in 1936 were fleeing oppressive laws that forbade them from being part of German society, taking their careers, businesses and belongings – this was relatively benign compared with what was to follow – state-organised exterminations did not start until the war was underway.

The Holocaust in Europe didn't develop until the Final Solution was devised.
Prior to that there had been genocide, and Pogroms on and off for Centuries
