Why do so many assume Mexico is a socially conservative country?

Abolished Slavery before the U.S.

Had a black president before the U.S.

No Death Penalty

Gay adoption and marriage recognized by all the states (as it's a federal issue)

Universal Health Care (Seguro Popular)

I just hate that people think my country is so socially conservative when it really is not.

Catholic does NOT Automatically mean Conservative.

Update:

@ edgar, Most likely your wife is from one of those 1 horse towns in southern Mexico.

    1) Been there for extended periods of time.

    2) Studied Mexico and Latin American for a dozen years in school.

    3) Married a Mexican woman.

    4) Like, KNOW the place, and its people - capisce, "liberal"?

    Any other questions, honey?

P.S. If you think 'your country' is not socially conservative, perhaps you need to get out more. Like, as in, you know, a LOT more! Jist sayun, hon.

It sounds awesome. Hopefully, you can convince more than a handful of north-of-the-border liberals to heed the siren song of their Hispanic liberal brethren and join you.

You forgot to add, they enforce their immigration laws while simultaneously blasting the U.S. for even considering enforcing theirs, they require voter ID, and don't think it's a good idea for the United States to require it.
