Why did Obama make gays a protected group in 2009, which effectively made the Bible hate speech?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_Shepard_Act

'James Dobson, founder of the socially conservative lobbying group Focus on the Family, opposed the Act, arguing that it would effectively "muzzle people of faith who dare to express their moral and biblical concerns about homosexuality".[13] However, H.R. 1592 contains a "Rule of Construction" which specifically provides that "Nothing in this Act...shall be construed to prohibit any expressive conduct protected from legal prohibition by, or any activities protected by the free speech or free exercise clauses of, the First Amendment to the Constitution".[22]'

Why did this provision fail in the case of Phil Robertson?

Update:

Carol, But apparently you CAN target people who quote from the Bible, and their employers quake in fear of being accused of violating the Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009.

So just to avoid costly litigation, they have to get rid of you. Which is the only legally defensible thing to do, because Christians are NOT A PROTECTED GROUP but now gays are.

THANKS OBAMA for declaring open season on Christians.

Was Phil Robertson denied his legal right to free speech?

    No he was not.

    He voiced his opinion.

He suffered no federal or state legal charges for doing so.

So his free speech rights were fully protected.

The actions that his employer, A&E, took are not covered under any free speech rights.

A&E felt his opinion could have financial concerns for A&E and their ad revenues and they were well within their rights to take action.

It had nothing was so ever to do with Mr. Robertson's free speech or religious rights.

Because you simply can not target someone simply because they are gay, or because they are black, or Jewish, or Muslim, or any other persons they decide they do not like.

Keep in mind that the Bible was written over 1500 YEARS and no one even knows who the authors are. But since you wish to use the Bible as a reference, the Bible says God loves everyone.

Where did you get the *stupid* idea that anything failed Phil Robertson? There is nothing in the law that says that a company cannot fire you for saying things that could harm the business. Robertson can say any amount of hate speech he wants. And A&E can fire him any time they want. That's free enterprise.

No such law exists, nor are gays afforded special status. Having access to the same rights under the law (and that includes protection from murder) does not mean special status.

I agree, James Dobson is an ***. He spouts such nonsense.

Only an idiot would say that Obama makes the Bible hate speech. It is hard to believe such uneducated people can even read and talk.

Technically, everyone has freedom speech ...

Just like how technically you can tell a cop to "screw off" but, we all know what would happen if someone did that...

Just because a law says someone, doesn't make it so...

Why would they need protection being citizens of the United States ...

No one is muzzling people of faith. Their is quite the opposite happening as you propose. People of Faith have become more inclusive with many of its members some of who happen to be gay.

    the premise is false

    by the way

using the word "fact" does not make it so

using it uppercase also does not make it so
