What are programming and coding and is there a difference between them?

I am an older computer user and have noticed that programming and coding are being mentioned more and more in the news. But as someone who only uses the internet to send e-mails, shop online, download music, etc. I do not understand what these ideas are about.

Can anyone explain simply?

coding is just the term for typing out the text in a programming language.

so you might say "I'm a computer programmer, so I was coding all day"

so the general public will know you program computers but the tech savvy people will understand you have been typing your *** off all day.

As for what programming/coding IS: it's writing a series of instructions using a programming language. Usually, those instructions are compiled into binary code / machine code, which means the computer can run it.

If Word and iTunes were furniture, the programmer would be the carpenter.
