Is ISIS a politico-social phenomena, and only casual?
Or has deeper, older roots?

If you want to be serious about it, it has roots in human nature stemming back hundreds of thousands of years. Yes, it's a militant doomsday cult based on a branch of Islam. But the drive for such a thing doesn't require Islam, people with different superstitions can from violent doomsday cults.
The ability to recruit large numbers of people stems from political, social, and/or economic conditions.

It is a politico-social phenomena as you mentionned, and it's the mere concentration of Islamism.

It is a religious movement in the last days bringing the earth to a time when all wickedness will be removed.
(Psalm 37:9-11) 9 For evil men will be done away with, But those hoping in Jehovah will possess the earth. ו [Waw] 10 Just a little while longer, and the wicked will be no more; You will look at where they were, And they will not be there. 11 But the meek will possess the earth, And they will find exquisite delight in the abundance of peace.

It is the sharp end of the Islamic wedge..just as the Conquistadors were the pointy end of Catholicism, converting by the sword before the 'moderates' followed behind.

They can trace their roots to the beginning of the Satanic cult called Islam, if you look at the history of Muslims they have always used war and murder to spread their territory.
Regardless the name of a particular terrorist group they are the same with the same intentions.
