    There are several types for different purposes and their purpose is to allow computers to access them to retrieve information stored on them basically, here is a safe link to a short explanation;

    A server is anything that serves. When you go to a restaurant, the server is the person who serve's you the food you ordered. A computer server is a server that serves a certain purpose as well. For instance, if you want email, an email server will serve that email service to you. If you want to go to a website, a web server will serve that website to you.

    Storage of information ( like a large Hard drive that anyone you want can acess )

    or you can get a mail server , to manage all your emails and documents for employees etc.

    Theres good info online. but mainly its for storage and the transfer of data/files from this storage. Im no expert either so research is the key
