Paul Lawton, US lawyer, naval historian and diver has made numerous dives to the U-853. It was sunk in action off the coast of Rhode Island in May, 1945 and it was rumored to be carrying a valuable cargo but none has been found. It's still a popular dive site today.
You might thinking of the U-234. It was on a secret mission to Japan with two Japanese techs on board but it's valuable cargo included uranium not gold. But the war ended before it reached Japan and it surrendered to the US Navy in May, 1945. The Navy took it to the US and eventually sunk it off Cape Cod in 1947. There is a documentary about it called Hitler's Last U-Boat.
? Found it by searching "uboat gold lost". First page hit.
U-196. The name of the show and the dates aired is right there. Hint: it wasn't on National Geographic.
Oh please - it was secret but on National Geographic. It sank in the Atlantic (with a Japanese technician as a bonus) but sank somewhere shallow enough to be found and filmed - engage brain please this is fiction.
