# whats the difference between a horizontal compression and vertical stretch or vice versa?

So I m having trouble recognizing the difference between the two since theyre similar in how they look, I can identify which is which if im given the equation but if im given a graph and asked to make the equation i usually cant tell. Is there an easier way to know?

you can't tell from the graph since they will look the same:

f(x) = x^2

4 f(x) would be a vertical stretch

f(2x) is a horizontal compression

but they both look like 4x^2
